About
Scottish Highland Cattle
Highland cattle are a heritage breed of cattle with long horns and long wavy coats that come in an array of colors, including black and white, red, yellow, dun, silver, and brindle. While traditionally bred for high-quality, marbled beef, their friendly, docile nature and trainability has supported their popularity as pets/companions. Highland cows can also be milked on a small scale, producing an average of 2 gallons of high butterfat (up to 10%) milk per day. which can be just right for personal use.
Highland cattle are bred for different frame sizes at maturity (3 years of age, measured at the top of the pin bones):
-
Micro/Mini: >42"
-
Mid-size: 42-48" (the standard size for Highland cattle)
At maturity, a mid-size Highland cow will average 900-1200 pounds, while standard bulls will average 1500-1800 pounds. When well cared for, they have a life expectancy of 15-22 years. Highlands are slower growing and very efficient eaters on marginal pastures. They can also be an optimal choice for smaller acreages.
Our Fold
Twisted Pines Farm and Vineyard breeds Scottish Highland cattle, as well as Angus x Highland crosses. While some members of our fold are more skeptical of their humans than others, all are quick to remind us of feeding time and many are quick to offer a gentle nudge of the horn in search of treats.
Our fold currently includes dun and yellow cows being paired with a black bull. All of ourcalves are out of mid-sized Highland cattle.
